We don’t want to criticize pure-play VoIP service providers too much, but the evidence keeps piling up against them. Now, eBay is taking a $1.4 billion charge against earnings that it acknowledged is partly related to having overpaid for Skype when it bought the company for $2.6 billion two years ago last month.

Skype is coming off a well-publicized service outage of international proportions, and it’s tempting to assign any decline or misunderstanding in value to VoIP quality. But, the simple fact is that any kind of voice service isn’t worth as much as it used to be, and is worth far more as part of a bundle with IPTV and other services.
