Sprint to cut jobs, may move back to Kansas

Following the recent appointment of Dan Hesse as CEO, Sprint Nextel is considering laying off a few thousand of its 60,000 total employees, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The carrier, which has suffered through customer defections and ongoing corporate strife related to the Sprint Nextel merger, cut about 5000 jobs last year.

The story also says the company is considering moving its headquarters from Reston, Va., back to Overland Park, Kan., where Sprint had been based before it merged with Nextel. The company still has more employees-about 13,000-at the sprawling Overland Park campus than it has anywhere else. Some, but not all, of the Reston employees would be asked to move, according to the report.
