Free SIP based VoIP soft phone for Windows from PICO Phone - small, light, and capable
Try an easy IP to IP program, with a small 57 Kb download.
Visit Pico Phone, get a free phone (opens in a new window), and then call your buddy using his or her IP address. This program sounds great, and you can send a copy to anyone by email because it is such a small file. It only takes a minute to try this.
We tested Pico Phone on our network and it worked well for calls between workstations. The built in text chat worked well for passing links back and forth. Althought you do not need to touch your router, we forwarded one port from the web and Pico answered calls from the web just fine.
Whether you want to call another location, take the load off of your internal phone system, bypass a PBX, or simply want a small phone that you can email to somebody, Pico Phone might be it. Not a full blown SIP phone, but it is free and sound quality was good. Sample email: "This 57 KB small attachment is a phone. Just click the file and call me at 69.68.110.165 and we can talk."
Some people call it Pico Phone, and others PicoPhone. Either way, here is a screen shot:
