CLECs want in on fiber

As Verizon Communications increases the pace at which it’s rolling out its FiOS fiber network upgrades, competitive carriers are renewing the fight at the Federal Communications Commission to force Verizon to share its fiber capacity in the same way it has been forced to share it copper capacity. The Washington Post reports that 22 CLECs sent a letter to the FCC asking for a fiber network sharing policy.

Verizon and other ILECs argue that old network-sharing policies don’t apply to fiber because the supporting business model competes with cable TV. The cable TV companies ironically have given big telcos what they always wanted–competitors they don’t have to help foster.
