Majority Of Executives Plan Converged Networks

Voice-over-IP is getting a lot of attention these days, but it’s only part of the future networking picture. Sixty percent of companies hope to deploy converged networks over most or all of their organizations by 2008, according to a new worldwide survey of executives conducted by AT&T and research group Economist Intelligence Unit. The survey shows that respondents don’t view convergence as just VoIP, but also data and media that cohabitate with voice on device-independent networks.

“We’re getting to the point where a single network can do it all,” says Eric Shepcaro, AT&T’s vice president of Business Strategy and Development.

The survey of 236 executives also finds nearly 50% of companies surveyed already have begun to converge their networks in some way. Just 4% of those surveyed say converged networks are unimportant, suggesting that a large majority of companies view potential cost, customer service and collaboration benefits from converged networks.
