History of Voice over the Internet - VoIP and SIP from 1995 to the present

In 1995 vendors began developing software that allowed Internet users to talk to each other. IBM headed a project called "Bamba Phone" which actually incorporated video in an IP to IP software package.

Products such as Free Phone, Bamba Phone, MediaRing Talk, Message ASAP, and many others looked for a good way to use H323 protocol and dialup connections for voice. Echo was horrible, and the protocol was bulky. But the products worked.

For those that want to try the original IBM Bamba Phone, we still have it available. Send us a request from here, but tell us what website you are on and exactly what you are requesting. We have over 50 websites and unclear emails are deleted. IBM Bamba Phone ran under Windows and was programmed for Windows 3.11. Yes, we've been doing this for a while. Bamba came from the original IBM beta site, and IBM pulled after testing. It was later rolled into another project. We disassembled a cordless phone in early 1998, modified it to work with a sound card, and had a WiFi prototype.

By 1998, total voice over IP minutes used were only 1/2 million or so. In 2004 over 100 billion minutes of voice over IP time will be used. With the application of SIP and easy to use codecs, the voice over IP field has grown. Remember, 11 years ago the Internet had no graphical interface. We did everything by Telnet. Windows was an infant. Dial-up was at 1200 baud.

Today, Japan and India have widely adopted Voice over the Internet. Countries where the phone systems are unreliable have another choice. Satellite Internet providers such as DirectWay give us more options. Now we can go to a HotSpot or Internet Cafe, and we can talk on our SIP phone. Voice communication is built into Windows XP using Windows Messenger. (version 4.7 for XP, or version 4.6 for 2000/98/ME)

Business applications using SIP and VPN ( virtual private networking ) or businesses with facilities around the world can link them together with routers for an nice PBX package. Vendors see the SIP and VOIP markets as the wave of the future, and they are correct. Experience the sound quality and connectivity of your SIP software by calling us today.
