We had a request for help and after we answered the email we decided to put the answer here. The question was 'How do I call Hong Kong for free?'
The answer depends on how detailed and professional a person wants to get. Obviously both the person in Hong Kong and the person in the United States can both download Skype, Babble, DingoTel or many other soft phones and talk to each other.
But if a VoIP provider says they can interface with an ATA adapter they also mean they can interface with a hard phone that functions like an ata adapter. Examples are the Grandstream 286, 486, and Grandstream phones. It feels more natural than using the computer and software and a headset. Prices are low, and with the exchange rate prices a very low.
So you might pay a little for the phones but if you get a free VoIP provider everything else is free. Of course both ends must have Internet to talk over the Internet. In our case we use Stanaphone, and our account balance has been just over six dollars for eight months now. We never spend anything for worldwide SIP calls.
